Cooking oils to choose - Cooking oils to avoid

Verena Stark

My favorite cooking oils: Coconut oil, Ghee, Butter, Olive Oil, Avocado Oil

Several options are available for cooking oils, each with its characteristics and recommended uses. Here are some cooking oils that are generally considered healthy and unhealthy for various cooking methods:

Oils to choose for high-heat cooking:

Coconut Oil (best quality: organic, cold-pressed)

Butter (best quality: organic, grass-fed)

Ghee (best quality: organic, grass-fed)

Palm Oil (sustainably sourced / best quality: organic, grass-fed)

Oils to choose for no, low, and medium heat cooking:

Olive Oil (best quality: organic, cold-pressed)

Avocado oil (best quality: organic, cold-pressed)

Other healthy fats:

Seeds, Nuts, Avocado, Nut/Seed Butter, Coconut, Coconut butter

Oils to avoid:

Margarine

Vegan Butter

Butter made from Oil

Shortening

Soybean Oil

Grapeseed Oil

Safflower Oil

Sunflower Oil

Corn Oil

Canola Oil

Industrial seed oils/vegetable oils, in general, are not the best choices for health (except for avocado & olive oil). Most commercial vegetable oils are bleached and processed using chemicals. This processing can cause increased inflammation, autoimmune disease, and many health issues. These processed oils oxidize quickly, meaning they rob the body of much-needed antioxidants.

Unfortunately, restaurants and processed foods use industrial seed oils, so what we use for cooking at home is even more critical. Also I would recommend checking the labels when buying foods, especially for your little ones.

Overall I hope most of us know by today that healthy fats are not bad for us. They are essential for the proper functioning of your body and brain. They balance blood sugar, provide energy, support cell growth, help absorb fat-soluble vitamins, and contribute to hormone production. (The fats to avoid are Trans Fats - found in processed / fried foods)

Also, when taking the fat out of foods, they taste like cardboard, so to make up for this, the food needs to be filled with sugars and chemicals.

Another tip: Oils should be stored in dark, glass containers.
